Girls' BB: Ogallala defeats Holdrege and will face Minden in the SWC Semifinals

The Ogallala Indians High School Girls' Varsity basketball team defeated the Holdrege Dusters 58-45 in the first round of the Southwest Conference Tournament on Tuesday evening at the Steve Morgan Court in the Prairie View Gymnasium in Ogallala, Nebraska, on January 29th, 2025.


For the Tournament, Holdrege was ranked as the #5 seed while Ogallala was ranked as the #4 seed.


Emily Stutzman scored 18 points for Holdrege. She made three threes and three free throws.


Ogallala's Hayden Shaw led all scorers with 19 points. She made five three-pointers and two free throws.


Shaw has also been the top scorer for Ogallala for at least the last three games which all just happened to be at home.


Shaw made a three-point shot right away to give Ogallala a 3 to 0 lead.


Ogallala led 10-0 with 5:15 left in the first quarter.


Holdrege then made some three point shots, but Ogallala still led 21 to 10 after the first quarter.


Ogallala led 30 to 25 at halftime.


Ogallala led 37 to 31 with 3:59 left in the third quarter.


Holdrege kept themselves in it and they trailed just by two at the end of the third quarter, 44 to 42.


Ogallala's defense took over in the fourth quarter and pretty much shut down Holdrege completely in the fourth quarter as Ogallala led 49 to 42 with 4:37 left in the fourth quarter.


Ogallala led 52 to 44 with 1:41 left in the game and at that point it appeared Holdrege was going to lose.


Ogallala won the game 58 to 45.


Holdrege's Gracie Johnson scored ten points. She made two three-pointers.


Keeley Vaughn made three three-pointers for a total of nine points.


Addy Stutzman scored five points. She made a three-point shot.


Carson Sundquist made a two-point basket.


Gabby Rooks made a free throw and scored one point.


Ogallala's Shaydyn Rasby scored 16 points. All of her made shots were two points apiece.


Aniston O'Neill scored 13 points. She made three three-point baskets.


Laney Caskey scored six points and made two free throws and two two-pointers.


Addison Slama made a two-point basket.


Addison Powell made two free throws and totaled two points.


Holdrege fell to 10-8 while Ogallala improved to 12-5.


According to the Nebraska School Activities Association, Holdrege is now ranked 25th in Class C-1 while Ogallala is now ranked 13th in Class C-1.


Holdrege dropped three spots from what the rankings were on Monday afternoon, January 28th, 2025, and Ogallala moved up three spots with the win.


In other Southwest Conference Tournament scores:

#8 Cozad lost to #1 Minden 63-22.

#2 Gothenburg destroyed #7 Valentine 72-15.

#6 McCook defeated #3 Broken Bow 44-36.


#5 Holdrege will play #3 Broken Bow in Gothenburg on Thursday, January 30th. According to nsaahome.org, Broken Bow is ranked 12th in Class C-1 in Nebraska.


#8 Cozad will play #7 Valentine in Gothenburg on Thursday, January 30th as well.


#4 Ogallala will play #1 Minden in Kearney on Friday, January 31st, at 6:30 p.m. Central Time. Ogallala lost at Minden 73-32 on Saturday, December 7th, 2024.


According to nsaahome.org, Minden is the #2 ranked team in Class C-1 in Nebraska.


Ogallala is 2-0 this season when playing the same opponent a second time.


#6 McCook will play #2 Gothenburg in Kearney on Friday, January 31st, at 8:00 p.m. Central Time.


The winner of Ogallala-Minden and McCook-Gothenburg will play in the Southwest Conference championship game on Saturday, February 1st, 2025, in Kearney. That game is slated for 6:15 p.m. Central Time.


The third-place game will take place at 2:45 p.m. Central Time on Saturday.


After the Southwest Conference Tournament, Holdrege will play at Cozad on February 6th and at Grand Island Central Catholic on February 11th. They close out the season at St. Paul on February 14th.


After the Southwest Conference Tournament, Ogallala will host McCook on Friday, February 7th and at Broken Bow on Saturday, February 8th.


They travel to Gothenburg on February 11th and host the Maywood/Hayes Center Wolves on Thursday, February 13th.
