Rich Hill needs run support; Before April 19th game vs. Toronto Blue Jays
Rich Hill (Photo from MLB.com Video; https://www.mlb.com/gameday/twins-vs-red-sox/2022/04/18/663236#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=videos,game=663236)
The Boston Red Sox lost 8-3 to the Minnesota Twins on Monday afternoon on Patriots Day in Massachusetts.
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Rich Hill clearly needs run support in his next start. The Red Sox offense has been so awful that they have not even scored one run when Hill has actually been in the game so far this regular season. In two starts this regular season, Hill has pitched nine innings pitched total.
The Red Sox could not have won anyway on Monday if you forget about all of the innings that Rich Hill did not pitch. Boston's offense has scored eight runs and has given up four runs this regular season when Rich Hill is no longer pitching in the game that he has pitched in. At least for Hill, the Red Sox actually won the game on April 12th, 5-3 at the Detroit Tigers.
Hansel Robles will definitely pitch at some point in the next game Boston needs a relief pitcher, which probably will be tonight (Tuesday). Matt Barnes may also pitch tonight (Tuesday) and I also expect Garrett Whitlock to pitch sometime tonight (or for sure tomorrow) as well.
Jake Diekman will definitely get a chance to pitch in a high stress situation if he is needed tonight or for any of the games of this Toronto series at Fenway Park. Austin Davis and Ryan Brasier may also get a chance to pitch tonight in a low stress situation, but I wouldn't necessarily count on that happening tonight, but they probably will get a chance to pitch tomorrow or on Thursday for sure.
Phillips Valdez, who pitched yesterday 1 1/3 innings pitched yesterday, has done everything right and hasn't given up any runs so far this regular season.
Kutter Crawford probably won't pitch tonight at all (and probably not on Wednesday either) but he probably will have a good chance to pitch on Thursday and/or Friday. Crawford pitched 1 2/3 innings pitched yesterday, and Red Sox manager Alex Cora probably would have pulled him from the game in the top of the eighth inning after he got the second out if yesterday's game was in June, July, August or September.
Crawford probably deserves some of the blame for the Red Sox loss yesterday by having to take responsibility for fur runs scoring and his wild pitch with two outs in the eight inning already to allow Max Kepler to score the Twins' 5th run of the game didn't help.
Hirokazu Sawamura pitched 1 1/3 innings yesterday, and for the most part, has done a good job so far this regular season. Other than giving up the Twins final run yesterday on a wild pitch in which Gilberto Celestino scored, he did a good job yesterday. Sawamura will probably be asked to pitch on Wednesday or Thursday.
Finally, pray for Rich Hill and his family. His dad died on Friday of last week.

Actual won-lost records in the 2022 regular season for Boston Red Sox pitchers not depending on whether the Boston Red Sox actually win any one specific game or not.
In other words, this tells the complete picture of their entire regular season (the good and the bad) of how many people the pitcher got out (innings pitched) and how many runs the pitcher truthfully gave up (which is more accurate than runs or even earned runs given up). So to make this more easy for people to understand, starting pitchers don't 100% get blamed for the inherited runners that the reliever(s) allow to score. The starter will get 25%, 50% or 75% blame for giving up one run instead, for an inherited runner that eventually scores.
Also, a pitcher can get a partial win and a partial loss in the same game. So pitchers that throw more innings pitched are going to get a higher percentage of partial wins and pitchers who give up more runs are going to get a higher percentage of partial losses. So if one pitcher pitches a complete game he will get one win (regardless of the team's win/loss result) and if the pitcher's team actually loses that same game in which he was the only pitcher who pitched for his team, he will also get credit for one loss.
The only time any pitcher cannot take a loss or a partial loss is if the winning team doesn't give up any runs to the team they are playing.
Basically, this is truly giving credit where credit is due among pitchers only.
