Benintendi lifts Red Sox past Marlins

Andrew Benintendi was part of all the major action as the Boston Red Sox won 4-2 over the Miami Marlins in 13 innings on Tuesday night.

He had a game-saving outfield assist for the Red Sox on defense when the Marlins’ Justin Bour tried to score the winning run in the bottom of the 11th.

Brian Anderson scored both of the Marlins runs.

The first run he scored was in the bottom of the fourth on Bour’s double, which tied the game at 1-1.

In the 11th inning, with baserunners on first and second and Boston leading 2-1, Anderson scored from second base on a double by Cameron Maybin. Justin Bour tried to score all the way from first base on the same play, but was cut down by Benintendi, the left fielder, whose relay throw to shortstop Xander Bogaerts who threw to catcher Christian Vazquez saved the game for Boston.

Benintendi on offense also scored two runs and had an RBI for the Red Sox.

He walked, stole a base and scored on a J.D. Martinez single in the top of the first inning to give Boston a 1-0 lead.

Benintendi then singled in Eduardo Nunez from second base which gave Boston a 2-1 lead in the top of the 11th inning.

Then in the top of the 13th inning, Mookie Betts singled and Benintendi was intentionally walked with two outs in the inning after two balls were thrown by Marlins pitcher Tayron Guerrero. Both Boston runners scored on Hanley Ramirez’s double, which gave the Red Sox a 4-2 lead.

Benintendi started the season going 0 for 13 at the plate with two walks. He finished Tuesday’s game with two singles and two walks and had one hit the entire season before that.

The Boston Red Sox are 5-1 and are on a current five-game winning streak. The Miami Marlins on the other hand are 2-4 and are on a current two-game losing streak. They have already played three extra-inning games this season and have one win and two losses in those games.

The Red Sox next game is Thursday which is their home opener at Fenway Park in Boston where they will face off against the Tampa Bay Rays with first pitch set for 2:05 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, the Marlins travel to Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia to take on the Phillies, which is also their home opener, on Thursday where they will start play at 3:05 p.m. ET.
