Austin Davis staring pitcher preview before May 15th game at the Texas Rangers

Boston Red Sox pitcher Austin Davis (0-1, 2.70 ERA) is making his first career Major League start today at the Texas Rangers.

This regular season, Davis has given up four runs in 13 1/3 innings pitched.

He has given up 2 runs in 2 2/3 innings pitched in Red Sox wins this regular season.

Davis has pitched 10 2/3 innings pitched in Boston losses this regular season and has given up two runs.

If you want to be more specific and truly give credit where credit is due, this regular season, he still is going to get blamed for giving up two runs in Red Sox wins, but he has actually given up just 1.750 runs in Red Sox losses.

Davis hasn’t pitched since May 8th (one week ago), so I guess people who think ahead probably would have known after Friday’s game that he was going to get this start today.

The Red Sox are 3-11 in his games this regular season with the last Boston victory coming on April 22nd at Tampa Bay. The Red Sox are on a seven-game losing streak when he pitches.

Boston is 1-3 when Davis gives up a run or a partial run.

He gave up half a run on May 1st despite the fact that his runs and earned runs statistics say he didn’t.

So according to Major League Baseball, officially the Red Sox are 1-2 when he gives up a run(s).

Davis has actually helped the Boston win three games and he has actually helped them lose three games.

If you give him a win or a loss decision for every game this regular season, he is 11-3.

Technically, he probably should be considered at 10-4 because the Red Sox won on April 13th at the Detroit Tigers, but he gave up two runs (the most runs he has actually given up in any appearance this regular season), so that should probably be considered a loss.

I guess the Red Sox must have felt like pitcher Tanner Houck needs to work on some things before he starts (or pitches) again.

As of before today’s game (Sunday), other than Nick Pivetta (with 2.975 losses), Tanner Houck has the most actual losses (2.488) of any Boston pitcher this regular season.

Other than Kevin Plawecki and John Schreiber, Davis has performed the best this regular season for the Red Sox. That is an objective fact, not an opinion. He is getting the opponents out and not allowing them to score.

As of after the Tuesday, May 10th game here are the following facts:

Davis is tied for eighth in ERA, he is seventh in run average and fifth in both true run average and very true run average.

In ERA, run average, true run average and very true run average:

In wins he is ranked 14th out of 18 Boston pitchers and in losses he is ranked third.

Davis’s run average is 2.70 while his true run average and very true run average is 2.53 this regular season.

In Red Sox wins, his ERA, run average, true run average and very true run average is 6.75.

In Boston losses, his ERA and run average are 1.69 while his true run average and very true run average are 1.48.

Tanner Houck clearly has some work to do as his current very true run average is 4.94 (compared to his 5.70 ERA).

In Red Sox wins, Houck has a 1.31 very true run average (compared to a 2.25 ERA).

In Boston losses, he has a 8.68 very true run average (compared to a 9.26 ERA).

As of after Tuesday’s win, Houck is the only Red Sox starting pitcher (including Davis and Garrett Whitlock) this regular season with a sub .500 performance, meaning the opponent is winning more than Boston is.
