The Gering B&C Steel Junior Legion Baseball team defeated the Ogallala Adams Insurance Advisors Juniors 17-0 on Sunday, June 29th, 2025, at the Ogallala American Legion Field in Ogallala, Nebraska.
The game started at approximately 11:00 a.m. Mountain Time and lasted only an hour and only three innings were played due to the mercy rule.
Gering's Greyor Henton pitched three innings giving up just two hits, striking out five (three swinging and two looking) and hitting just one batter. He only faced 12 batters total.
Keegan Florom had the only two hits for Ogallala which were both singles. Florom advanced to second on a throwing error by Henton on a pickoff attempt at first base.
Preston Runge got on base by getting hit by pitch and he advanced to second (while Keegan Florom advanced to third) on a flyout to right field by Ogallala's Lou Menotti.
Ogallala got the first two batters on base and then didn't get another batter on base until one out in the bottom of the third inning when Keegan Florom got his second hit.
Offensively for Gering, Garrett Wagoner led the way by going 2 for 2 with three runs scored and he had six RBI's. He double and tripled.
Jay Bookman also had pretty good stats as he went 3 for 3 scoring three runs and he had four RBI's. All three hits by Bookman were singles.
Gering's Hunter Fankhauser and Jacoby Elliott each had one hit, one RBI and two runs scored.
Greyor Henton, Derrick Brown and Christian Murillo each had a single and scored two runs.
Logan Yeager scored two runs.
In the top of the first inning, Ogallala's starting pitcher Jerzy Wolicki hit the first two batters of the game.
A fielding error by Ogallala third baseman Levi Nolt allowed Gering to take a 1-0 lead on a grounder by Gering's Greyor Henton scoring Garrett Wagoner from second base.
A single by Jay Bookman scored Hunter Fankhauser from second base making it 2-0 Gering.
Derrick Brown then got hit by a pitch to load the bases. A couple of passed balls allowed Gering to scored two more runs, making it 4-0 in favor of Gering.
After a popout by Eli Rodriguez to first base, Logan Yeager walked and Christian Murillo popped out to center field.
Jacoby Elliott walked to reload the bases and then Garrett Wagoner hit a three-run double to make it 7-0 Gering.
Hunter Fankhauser lined out to center field to end the top of the first.
Ogallala's Jerzy Wolicki pitched one inning giving up seven runs, two hits, walked two batters and hit three and he struck out zero.
Jonah Saner then pitched the second inning for Ogallala giving up a single to Greyor Henton.
Henton then advanced to second on a throwing error by Ogallala catcher Keegan Florom.
Jay Bookman then hit another RBI single by driving in Henton from third base (who stole third base) making the score Gering 8, Ogallala 0.
Bookman stole a base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Saner then struck out Derrick Brown and walked Eli Rodriguez.
Logan Yeager then hit a pop up that the Ogallala shortstop Levi Nolt should have caught, but who had enough awareness to get a force out at second base (and I can't remember if he flipped it to his second baseman or not).
Gering scored another run as a result and then Christian Murillo singled to advance Yeager to second.
Jacoby Elliot struck out swinging to end the top of the second and Gering led 9-0.
Saner then went back out there to pitch the top of the third inning and he walked the first two batters.
Garrett Wagoner stole second (before Hunter Fankhauser was walked) and then Greyor Henton hit into an infield fly near the first base bag officially at the second baseman which no Ogallala defensive player caught for the first out of the inning.
Wagoner and Hunter Fankhauser stole a base each putting runners at second and third and then Jay Bookman came through again with another single, this time scoring two runs to make the score Gering 11, Ogallala 0.
Derrick Brown then hit a single to right field and Eli Rodriguez popped up to the second baseman for the second out of the inning.
Logan Yeager got hit by a pitch and that was the last batter Jonah Saner faced.
Jonah Saner pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up seven runs, five hits, three walks, two strikeouts (one swinging and one looking) and he hit one batter.
The new Ogallala pitcher Cale Potter then threw a wild pitch scoring Jay Bookman to make the score Gering 12, Ogallala 0 and advancing the other Gering baserunners one base.
