AFC East Preview 2022-2023 National Football League

By: Evan Troxel

AFC East Preview:

Buffalo Bills:

The Buffalo Bills made it to four straight Super Bowls from 1991 to 1994 (and lost them all). I guess Super Bowl XXV (25) is a constant reminder for the Bills that they almost won the Super Bowl, only losing by one point to the New York Giants 20-19 on Scott Norwood’s missed field goal. I do think that the Bills have a good shot to win the Super Bowl this year.

Do I actually think the Buffalo Bills will ever win the Super Bowl? No! But never say never. Maybe they will someday, but every team in the NFL other than the Bills will have to be awful that season. Stefon Diggs is clearly the face of the franchise on offense (other than the quarterback) while Von Miller is that on defense. I am just baffled why Von Miller would even sign with this team other than for the money. Von has two Super Bowl rings and the only reason to reward him with another Super Bowl ring in Buffalo is if it takes away a Super Bowl ring from other good teams in the AFC (and in the NFC) right now that the people who control everything in this world dislike.

Buffalo is the only team in the AFC East who still has not won at least one Super Bowl. So they are due to win a Super Bowl sometime in the future.

Quarterbacks: Josh Allen, Matt Barkley, Case Keenum

This is clearly Josh Allen’s team right now. He has played in 61 NFL games and has 60 starts.

Case Keenum actually has more NFL games played and starts than Allen. He has 64 NFL starts in 76 NFL games.

Allen played in 26 games (25 starts) while at Wyoming in college Case Keenum played in 57 games in college at Houston.

Keenum also has thrown more passes and attempts than Allen did in college and in the NFL. So Keenum clearly is, or should be the backup QB.

Matt Barkley played in 47 games in college at USC. He has played in 19 NFL games and started 7 of those NFL games.

Barkley has the most starts (8) in the NFL with the Bills now. Matt Barkley has nothing to lose as long as the Bills don’t feel the need to add another quarterback to their roster.

Players I recognize:

Running backs: Duke Johnson (Miami)

Wide receivers: Tavon Austin (West Virginia), Jamison Crowder (Duke), Stefon Diggs (Maryland), O.J. Howard (Alabama), Isaiah McKenzie (Georgia)

Defensive lineman: Shaq Lawson (Clemson)

Linebackers: Von Miller (Texas A&M)

Kicker: Tyler Bass (Georgia Southern

Punter: Matt Haack (Arizona State)

Miami Dolphins:

It feel s like this is going to be another failed season of not getting to the playoffs in Miami. It will be 49 years in February 2023 since Miami’s last Super Bowl win in January 1974 and 50 years in February 2023 since Miami’s first Super Bowl win in January 1973, the perfect 17-0 1972-1973 season. Miami is ranked third in the AFC East for teams that deserve to win the Super Bowl again. Although, I believe they haven’t won a playoff game since December 30th, 2000 vs. the Indianapolis Colts, which is the longest current playoff win drought among AFC East teams. So they are due to win a playoff game.

The Dolphins are probably going to finish 3rd or 4th in the AFC East again this year, unless quarterback Mac Jones and the New England Patriots don’t do well, then Miami could finish as high as 2nd in the division. It is unlikely the Dolphins are going to win the AFC East this year.

The new head coach Mike McDaniel helps, but in the short-term I think it is going to be a disaster. Miami is probably not going to make the playoffs within the next four seasons. So hopefully owner Stephen Ross and the Dolphins GM picked the right guy for the job in the long-term. Brian Flores did a good job as the head coach and basically everyone hates Stephen Ross and probably wishes partial owners Venus and Serena Williams would be making these important decisions instead of Stephen Ross.

Quarterbacks: Tua Tagovailoa, Teddy Bridgewater, Skylar Thompson

This is Tua’s team now. I have no idea why. My opinion is that the Dolphins should not have let Ryan Fitzpatrick go to the Washington Football Team in free agency last year and they definitely should not have let Jacoby Brissett go to the Cleveland Browns in free agency this year. I am not opposed to Tua playing, but I think a more experienced quarterback has to play to give your team a chance to at least make it to the playoffs! Plus, the advantage of switching quarterbacks is that it forces all of your players (at least on the offensive side of the ball) to be more invested in the team’s hopeful success.

In Tua’s first two seasons in Miami he played in 23 games and had 21 starts. In college at Alabama, Tua played in 32 games and had 24 starts.

Teddy Bridgewater has the most experience in the NFL as he has played in 73 games and has 63 starts. In college at Louisville Teddy played 39 games and had 13 starts.

Tua has 47 games compared to 43 games for Teddy dating back to before the 2018-19 season. Tua has 45 starts compared to 35 starts for Teddy dating back to before the 2018-19 season.

Skylar Thompson has nothing to lose as the third-string quarterback, as a rookie entering this season and the fact that he won’t be cut at all unless the Dolphins feel they have a more important need at another position and only want to have two quarterbacks on the roster.

Thompson played in 44 games and started in 39 games in college at Kansas State. He has 37 games and 36 start dating back to before the 2018-19 season.

Players I recognize:

Running backs: Myles Gaskin (Washington), Sony Michel (Georgia), Raheem Mostert (Purdue)

Wide Receivers: Cethan Carter (Nebraska), Mike Gesicki (Penn State), Tyreek Hill (West Alabama), Mohamed Sanu (Rutgers), Jaylen Waddle (Alabama)

Defensive Linemen: Ben Stille (Nebraska)

Linebackers: Andrew Van Ginkel (Wisconsin)

Defensive Backs: Xavien Howard (Baylor)

Punter: Thomas Morstead (Southern Methodist)

Kicker: Jason Sanders (New Mexico)

New England Patriots

In terms of Super Bowls, the Patriots really have nothing to complain about until the 2050-51 season. I mean what else is there to say, Josh McDaniels has moved on and is now the head coach the Las Vegas Raiders and Bill Belichick is probably going to be the head coach of the Patriots until he dies or until he physically cannot do the job anymore. Robert Kraft, the owner of the Patriots is getting old too, so I guess his children are going to take over for him someday.

The Patriots haven’t lost two straight playoff games since the 2010-11 playoffs when the New York Jets beat them in New England on January 16th, 2011. The next season, the Patriots lost Super Bowl XLVI to the New York Giants. Maybe the 2023 Super Bowl is supposed to be a celebration of Tom Brady (of what everyone is saying will be his final season this season) as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a good shot to be there as well.

Quarterbacks: Brian Hoyer, Mac Jones, Bailey Zapee

Mac Jones (Alabama) is clearly the starter as he has played 17 NFL games and has 17 NFL starts. Brian Hoyer (Michigan State) has 39 NFL starts in 75 NFL games. So Hoyer could take over as the starter if needed, but that likely isn’t going to happen at all unless Mac Jones gets injured.

Bailey Zapee is a rookie this upcoming season out of Western Kentucky. He played 37 games in 36 starts at Houston Baptist in college for four seasons before transferring for his final season of college at Western Kentucky in which he had 14 starts in 14 games. So he played 51 games in 50 starts in college. Zapee played more games in college than Jones or Hoyer did.

Players I recognize:

Running Backs: James White (Wisconsin)

Wide Receivers: Nelson Agholor (Southern California), Hunter Henry (Arkansas), DeVante Parker (Louisville), Matt Slater (UCLA)

Center: David Andrews (Georgia)

Defensive Linemen: Deatrich Wise (Arkansas)

Linebackers: Matt Judon (Grand Valley State), Raekwon McMillan (Ohio State)

Defensive Backs: Malcolm Butler (West Alabama), Devin McCourty (Rutgers), Jabrill Peppers (Michigan)

Punters: Jake Bailey (Stanford)

Kicker: Nick Folk (Arizona)

New York Jets

The Jets haven’t won a Super Bowl since January 12th, 1969 in Super Bowl III (3) when Joe Namath was the quarterback. They are probably due to win the Super Bowl again soon as Joe Namath cannot keep being asked to attend the Super Bowl and do the pre-game coin flip every year or every five or ten years or whatever it is.

The Jets have the longest playoff appearance drought among AFC East teams as they last appeared in the playoffs during the 2010-11 season. I guess New York can take solace in the fact that they lost in the Conference Championship in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons as the team who won the AFC Championship lost in the Super Bowl both of those years! So they didn’t have to lose on the very biggest stage of the NFL season.

Quarterbacks: Joe Flacco (Delaware), Chris Streveler (South Dakota), Mike White (Western Kentucky), Zach Wilson (Brigham Young)

Zach Wilson is obviously the starter by default. He played and started in 13 games last year. If the Jets are smart, maybe they should throw any of the other three quarterbacks out there for the first four through six games of the regular season. And if those quarterbacks win, obviously you stick with them until you think they are going to lose a game for your team. I would use Zach Wilson for when the games start to really matter, because, let’s be honest, the first four games of the regular season are not like any of the other games in the regular season.

Zach Wilson has also had plenty of off-the-field drama in the offseason this year. The only positive thing about that drama is that it was or is a distraction if the Jets win a lot of games this regular season.

Mike White played in four games last year and started in three of them. I would love to see the Jets start him every game this regular season. I think he just needs time (and a chance) to show everybody what he can do. If we’re being honest, Zach Wilson is just too young to be an NFL QB right now and needs time to grow which is why Mike White and Chris Streveler deserve a chance to play.

Joe Flacco started just one NFL game in the regular season last year. Flacco has 178 games played in 176 starts in the regular season and he hasn’t started in one game for the Jets in each of the previous two regular seasons. It is obvious Flacco should be the starter based on experience alone, but I guess the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles felt like he wasn’t better than the alternative for at least the last two seasons.

Chris Streveler is entering his third season in the NFL this year. This is his first season with the Jets and he has played in seven NFL regular season games with the Arizona Cardinals but didn’t start in any of them. Streveler is likely going to be the fourth-string quarterback unless the Jets feel he deserves to play more than Mike White and Joe Flacco.

Players I recognize:

Running Backs: Tevin Coleman (Indiana)

Tight Ends: C.J. Uzomah (Auburn)

Offensive Linemen: Connor McGovern (Missouri)

Linebackers: C.J. Mosley (Alabama)

Punter: Braden Mann (Texas A&M)

Greg Zuerlein (Missouri Western State)

The following is based on a week-by-week analysis of how each AFC East team did against their 2022-2023 regular season National Football League opponents the last time they faced them for each specific situation before the 2022-2023 preseason, regular season and postseason.

The last time for every scenario is only based on previous regular season or postseason games.

Last time ever...

Buffalo Bills (11-6) (Wins Tiebreaker)

New England Patriots (11-6) (Loses Tiebreaker)

Miami Dolphins (10-7)

New York Jets (5-12)

Last time ever at the home team's stadium...

Buffalo Bills (13-4)

Miami Dolphins (11-6) (Wins Tiebreaker)

New England Patriots (11-6) (Loses Tiebreaker)

New York Jets (3-14)

Last time ever in the regular season...

Buffalo Bills (11-6) (Wins Tiebreaker)

New England Patriots (11-6) (Loses Tiebreaker)

Miami Dolphins (10-7)

New York Jets (5-12)

Last time ever at the home team's stadium in the regular season...

Buffalo Bills (13-4)

New England Patriots (12-5)

Miami Dolphins (11-6)

New York Jets (3-14)

Last time ever (but the last ever game against the same opponent will not be counted twice, the last ever game against the same opponent that is the opposite of the home/road location will be counted the second time)

New England Patriots (12-5)

Buffalo Bills (10-7) (Wins Tiebreaker)

Miami Dolphins (10-7) (Loses Tiebreaker)

New York Jets (5-12)

So if all of these results come true, it looks like the Buffalo Bills are more than likely going to win the division (they will finish in at least the top two in the AFC East), the New England Patriots are more than likely going to finish in second place, the Miami Dolphins will finish no lower than third place and the New York Jets will finish in last in the AFC East.
